Michael Clay Thompson to present at MidWest Homeschool Convention

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

In our continuing efforts to provide the very best in equipping and educational resources for homeschooling families, we are pleased to announce that Michael Clay Thompson will be presenting at the 2010 MidWest Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati.

MICHAEL CLAY THOMPSON is the author of thirty books of language arts for gifted children, including The Word Within the Word series, Caesar’s English, The Magic Lens series, a series of six books about poetics, and other texts designed to provide the most challenging and appropriate language arts texts for high ability learners. Michael’s books are available from Royal Fireworks Press, and we’re pleased to also announce that Royal Fireworks Press is an Exhibitor at this year’s convention!

At this year’s convention, on Thursday evening, Dr. Tom Kemnitz of Royal Fireworks Press will present an introductory session on using the MCT curriculum.

MICHAEL CLAY THOMPSON will then be presenting two (2) times on Friday and two (2) times on Saturday. The Friday sessions will be GRAMMAR and VOCABULARY. The Saturday sessions will be POETICS and WRITING. The exact times and locations for these sessions will be on the final schedule of Speakers, Topics & Times that will be posted on our website.

What homeschoolers say about Michael Clay Thompson

…the books encourage depth, sensitivity, and reflection

…my favorite resources

I have never been so excited to start a curriculum…

  • I find that the Michael Clay Thompson books are so useful that I go back year after year for review and to get new ideas even after we’ve finished a book. It would be impossible to put a price on what we’ve gained from the series. I only wish all the materials I’ve bought over the years were as useful as MCT!  - – Elizabeth Pyle Ross, homeschooling parent.
  • The interest in words and what they mean has really shot up in our household…Thank you for not dumbing down.  – - Julie from Texas
  • I haven’t bothered with much Language Arts with my son because so many materials make me nervous and I can’t bear putting my son through that. And then came Michael Clay Thompson with his wonderful materials and the scales fell from my eyes and now we are a family of language lovers. We cuddle up on the couch and read them together like bedtime stories (sometimes in the morning). We both really dig them. Fun is had by all.  – - A Homeschooling Parent
  • These are my personal favorite resources for grammar, vocabulary, and etymology (word roots), as well as introductory studies of poetry and philosophy… – - Julie Shepherd Knapp, owner of the Homeschool Diner resources website
  • We have found these Michael Clay Thompson books to be our favorite things to read together. We have so few books written for the erudite learner that we simply enjoy them. - – Miriam, Homeschooling Parent, Maryland
  • I just received Paragraph Town, Essay Town and the corresponding workbooks. I have never been so excited to start a curriculum, probably because I can see many areas where I can learn with my daughter. I also bought Classics in the Classroom. I am astounded at Thompson’s ideas. I have thought for a very long time that we should be approaching literature education in a different manner and Classics in the Classroom seems to be the way to go. I promised my daughter that we wouldn’t start something new until this summer, but I don’t know if we can wait. She has already read the first three chapters of Paragraph Town in anticipation! - – Britta S on the MCTLA Yahoo Group
  • I find the materials extremely rich and imaginative. The language is just such a treat. Thanks, Michael, for your work and dedication to providing appropriate and beautifully crafted materials for our special students. - – Connie Bernard, BA English Literature: founder of the Yahoo homeschoolers’ discussion forum for Michael Clay Thompson, MCTLA

I think what makes this a gifted curriculum, and not merely a speeded-up curriculum, is not just more stuff at a faster pace-the books encourage depth, sensitivity, and reflection as well. - – Shaun Strummer, PhD English, editor, and homeschooling parent

Dr. Larry Schweikart speaking again this year!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Dr. Larry Schweikart was a SMASH HIT when he spoke at last year’s convention, and we are honored that he is speaking again this year! (As of this writing, “A Patriot’s History of the United States” is the #1 selling book at Amazon.com)

Larry Schweikart was born in Arizona, went to Arizona State University, got terrible grades, and upon graduation promptly went on the road as a drummer in a rock band. His group became semi-famous, opening for “Steppenwolf,” the “James Gang,” and “Mother’s Finest,” and drew the attention of Billboard Magazine. After a few years, however, Schweikart tired of the road and wanted a more intellectual pursuit. After a single U.S. history course during a stint in summer school, he decided he wanted to be a professor.

Graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1984, Schweikart had already written two books and several academic articles as a graduate student. After a year in the University of Wisconsin system, he took a position at the University of Dayton, where he teaches to the present.

Over the years, Schweikart has written nearly 30 books, dozens of articles and book reviews, and became an authority in antebellum banking and finance. In the 1990s, he wrote his own history of American business, The Entrepreneurial Adventure, then, with Michael Allen, began work on a larger project, a history of the United States.

Published in 2004 as A Patriot’s History of the United States, this book became a best-seller and attracted the attention of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and talk-show host Rush Limbaugh, who interviewed Schweikart for his newsletter in March 2004. Now in multiple editions and a fourth printing, Patriot’s History continues to be “the” alternative history for parents disgusted with the dominant liberal-left textbooks.

In 2006, Schweikart followed up with the controversial America’s Victories: Why the U.S. Wins Wars. Featured on BOOK TV and numerous television and radio shows, Schweikart was invited by the President of the United States to the Oval Office for an extended discussion of military history in August 2006.

Now, with his new book, 48 Liberal Lies About American History (That You Probably Learned in School) Schweikart is back in the culture wars. He has appeared on the “700 Club”, “Fox and Friends”, Fox News, Book TV, and dozens of national and local radio shows, including Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt, and many others. A novelist who has written a 9/11 thriller, September Day, and a World War II counterfactual military drama, Halsey’s Bluff, Schweikart brings history to life in a variety of venues.

Don’t Miss JOHN ROSEMOND, LIVE!

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

johnrosemondIt’s an honor to have JOHN ROSEMOND joining us as a Featured Speaker for this year’s convention! If you are looking for practical, effective, fun, Biblical parenting instruction and advice, you cannot afford to miss John’s sessions at this year’s MidWest Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati!

John Rosemond is one of America’s most popular speakers in the parenting field. In a given year, he gives more than 150 talks to parent and professional audiences all over the map. His talks are provocative, informative, practical, and always entertaining. John promises that his audiences will laugh…a lot.

John is a best-selling author, syndicated parenting columnist, and has been interviewed on many radio and television shows including Focus on the Family, 20/20, Good Morning America, The Today Show, CNN and others, as well as numerous print interviews.

John went into private practice in 1979. In 1989, his first book for Andrews McMeel, John Rosemond’s Six-Point Plan for Raising Happy, Healthy Children was published. Because it was so very different in its approach than the parenting books in the market, it attracted lots of attention and controversy. Suddenly, John was receiving invitations to speak from all over the USA and even Canada and even Europe and Australia, so he left private practice in 1990 and has been full time as a writer and speaker ever since

After writing ten books for Andrews McMeel, John wrote his first faith-based parenting book, Parenting by The Book, which was published by Howard Books (a subsidiary of Simon and Schuster) in 2007. In less than six months, PbTB sold so well that John was lured, willingly, into a three-book deal with Thomas Nelson, the biggest Christian publisher in the world. His first book for TN, The Diseasing of America’s Children: Exposing the ADHD Fiasco and Empowering Parents to Take Back Control, written with pediatrician Dr. Bose Ravenel, was published in September 2008. Next will come, The Well-Behaved Child: Discipline that Really Works!

ENDORSEMENTS

Dr. David C. Stoker (First Presbyterian Church Gastonia, NC) “John Rosemond is a most engaging and entertaining speaker and you will find your time with him fun, challenging and life changing. As a pastor of over twenty years I find the material biblically solid, drawing its teaching directly from Scripture.”

Pastor Mike Townsend (New Heights Baptist Church Columbia, SC) “Simply put, God’s Word came alive in an easy to understand and applicable fashion for some very frustrated parents.”

C. Ellis Fisher, M.D. (Pediatrician Gastonia, North Carolina) I recently had the opportunity to attend Parenting by The Book  presented by John Rosemond at First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC. The information has proven to be most helpful in my practice of pediatrics, and my only regret is that I did not discover this very practical, Scripture-based approach 29 years ago when I began my practice…I have incorporated John’s material into my every day counseling with patients and their parents, with excellent results.”
